Holiday On Repeat

December 5, 2016

The same outfits as last year.

The same outfits as last year.

The month of December is usually the time of year when I have the most opportunities to dress up.  Work parties, family parties, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, from now until the end of the year I’m attending at least one (sometimes more) events every week.  As a ex-shopaholic, the itch to run out to the stores to buy something new is highest at this time of year.  After all, how often do I get a chance to shop for something dressy?  Not very often.

No Longer Special

November 27, 2016

The holiday’s are approaching fast bringing with it one of my favorite things about this time of year, the opportunity to get dressed up.  My special occasion capsule is one of my least used capsules in my wardrobe.  In fact, it’s used so little I’m purging it!

Why on earth would someone do this right before the holiday’s arrive?

Double Duty Capsule Items (Month 5)

April 2, 2015

Recently I updated my business capsule wardrobe in three parts:

  1. Part One: Purging.  In part one, I reviewed my wardrobe and purged items as necessary.
  2. Part Two: Shopping.  In part two, I purchased new pieces.
  3. Part Three: Remixing. In part three, I double-checked that my new additions remixed well with my capsule items.

Any time something is added to my wardrobe, it’s going to have a ripple effect.  Not only will the capsule it’s added to change, but my overall wardrobe will change as well.  Let’s take a look at the impact of the new business capsule additions on my entire wardrobe.

Updating A Business Capsule Wardrobe-Part Three

Updated Business/Special Occasion Capsule (minus a white bag for the special occasion dress, whoops!)

Updated Business/Special Occasion capsule wardrobe (minus a white bag for the special occasion dress, whoops!)

I’m currently updating my business/special occasion capsule wardrobe in three parts.

  1. Part One: Purging.  In part one, I reviewed my wardrobe and purged items as necessary.
  2. Part Two: Shopping.  In part two, I purchased new pieces with a focus on the bottoms as the starting point.
  3. Part Three: Remixing. In part three, I’m going to double-check that my new additions will remix well with my items.

While I only ended up keeping items purchased from four stores, I actually shopped, purchased, and returned from over a DOZEN stores.  Every time something was purchased, the piece went through a review process at home, and if the items did not pass muster, back they went.

My Review Process:

Updating A Business Capsule Wardrobe-Part Two

New Additions.

A few new additions.

I’m currently updating my business/special occasion capsule wardrobe in three parts.

  1. Part One: Purging.  In part one, I reviewed my wardrobe and purged items as necessary.
  2. Part Two: Shopping.  In part two, I’m going to purchase new pieces.
  3. Part Three: Remixing. In part three, I’m going to double-check that my new additions will remix well with my items.

To update my business/special occasion capsule wardrobe, I focused on the bottoms.  My goal was to purchase bottoms that were seasonless colors and prints.  Pieces that could be sported year round.  While this capsule is being used more often than in the past, it’s still not my daily clothing.  For my non-primary capsule, I’d rather own fewer items that can be used year round, instead of a lot of seasonal items.

I purchased the following items and here’s why:

Business and Special Occasion Capsule

Business and Special Occasion capsule wardrobe before the edit.

The use of my business capsule has increased considerably over the past few months and the time has come to update this wardrobe.  Previously, my business/special occasion capsule wardrobe was covered in this post.

Rarely used, the photo at the top of this post highlights that this capsule was a collection of random items.  The business portion of the wardrobe was amassed from last minute impulse purchases.  I’d have one or two day notice of an upcoming meeting and be off to the stores to purchase something quickly to fulfill the role.

But this time around, I’m focusing on updating this wardrobe BEFORE I need the clothing.

Tops from the Business/Special Occasion capsule, added to the Fall/Winter capsule wardrobe

Happy New Year!  One of my goals in 2015 is to continue to reduce the size of my wardrobe.  At the beginning of month 1, I realized that I have many capsules in my wardrobe.  And if I want to succeed with The 80/20 Challenge, then I’m going to need to do more than simply purge clothing that I’m not using.  I also have to stretch the use of my capsules.  By using items in more than one capsule, I can maximize the use of my wardrobe.  The less divided into capsules my wardrobe is, the less chance there is for pieces to sit unworn for long periods of time.  This reasoning means my least used wardrobe capsules are my latest target for a little closet editing.

Business and Special Occasion Shoes

My first step for The 80/20 Challenge, is to figure out how much I own, in my entire wardrobe.  Until today, the focus of Shopping Brake has been on my most used capsules, which are my shoes, fall/winter, and spring/summer wardrobes.  And while these capsules have included my gear and workout wear, they’re not my entire wardrobe.  I also have business/special occasion, beach/swim, and lounge/sleep capsules.  Today I’m going to take a look at these capsules and how they affect my wardrobe totals.
