2017 Spring Capsule Wardrobe

May 1, 2017

With only 1 month left of spring I’ve already started reviewing this year’s Spring Capsule Wardrobe.  In my last post I began my Spring Capsule Wardrobe Check-In and discussed what was and wasn’t working over the past 2 months.

As long-time readers of Shopping Brake already know, I’m a big fan of crunching numbers.  Today I’m going to review exactly what’s inside my 2017 Spring Capsule Wardrobe, as well as what the total cost of this wardrobe is.

Spring Capsule Wardrobe Check-In

spring capsule wardrobe check-in

It’s time to check-in on my 2017 Spring Capsule Wardrobe.

My area gets roughly 3 months of spring weather—March, April, and May.  With 2 months under my belt since my Spring And Summer Capsule Wardrobe Prep (Part 3), I thought it would be a good time to check-in on how my Spring Capsule Wardrobe is doing thus far this season.  Here’s what’s working, and what isn’t:

Updating A Business Capsule Wardrobe

March 6, 2017

Five new additions to my Business Capsule Wardrobe.

Striped Cardigan | Ivory Sleeveless Blouse

Cobalt Pants | Burgundy Blouse (similar) | Black Lace Up Flats (similar)

While I was shopping for my Spring and Summer capsule wardrobe I found an opportunity to update my Business Capsule wardrobe too.  When I wrote my shopping list (in this post) I had 4 items I wanted to add to my Business Capsule wardrobe (1 new outfit consisting of three pieces and 1 blouse to pair with my current trousers).  I came close to this goal and added the 5 items at the top of this post.

Here’s what I bought and why:

Repair Don’t Replace

February 1, 2015

New laces instead of new boots.

New laces instead of new boots.

As I shop less often, and keep items longer, I’m starting to run into a new issue with my wardrobe—repairs!  These lace up booties have been worn 92 times for a current cost per wear of $1.96.  The laces ripped for the boot on the right.  In the past, any slight problem with an item in my wardrobe and I was off to the malls to shop for something to replace it.  These booties have two factors that would have previously caused me to shop for a replacement:

  1. Low cost per wear
  2. In need of repair

Except this time, I purchased new laces instead.

Do you prefer to repair or replace items?

Own Less Shoes, Wear More Often

January 11, 2015

Eight pairs of boots in my shoe capsule.

Eight pairs of boots in my shoe capsule.

Today I’m going to do a review and edit of my show capsule.  I currently own 18 pairs of shoes (1 purged since the last check-in) of which, eight are boots.  The mid calf boots with the heel are from my business/special occasion capsule.  The two cowboy boots are worn on the non rainy days for spring, summer and fall.  In the winter months, I don’t use them (the salt and slush and grime would ruin them).

Back To The Shoes (Week 41)

August 17, 2014

One in and one out.

One in // One out

I wasn’t expecting to return to my shoe wardrobe so soon, but DH was cleaning out his shoe wardrobe the other day and offered to help me with mine too.

  • My first round of shoe purging was here. At this time I added a few pairs and purged a few pairs, but ultimately ended up increasing the size of my shoe wardrobe to 20 pairs.
  • Later I analyzed my shoe wardrobe here.  This time around I realized that I could purge 60% of my shoe wardrobe (12 pairs) and still own enough shoes to cover the various occasions for my shoe wardrobe.  Fellow reader Lynn passed along great advice in the comments section of that analysis post:

“Sometimes it is easy to get carried away with the idea of a minimal ‘perfect’ wardrobe

and forget that the true issue is to buy less and buy what you really need.”

Following the comment, I decided to focus on discarding instead of replacing shoes as they wear out.  Over time, this will decrease the total number of my shoe wardrobe.

More on French Wardrobes

July 3, 2014

My first pair of worn out shoes.

My first pair of worn out shoes!

It’s been 2 weeks since I began The French Capsule Challenge, which was inspired by French/Parisian wardrobes.  I selected a core of 4 colors, spread out among 21 items for 3 weeks.  For my observations after week 1, check out this post.  After 2 weeks I have a few additional observations:

  1. The more you wear it, the faster it wears out
  2. Prefer a non-black core, less contrast, or both

Let’s jump right into the observations.

Summer Soles in Tan Suede

Summer Soles in Tan Suede

The warm weather is officially in my area (it was over 90F the past two days) so it seems like a good time for me to talk about my solution to sweaty, slipping feet in shoes and sandals for spring/summer.  I mentioned my solution to a co-worker recently and she liked it so much I thought I would talk about them here on the blog too.

How Low Can the Shoes Go?

May 22, 2014

Can my shoe wardrobe go even lower than 12 pairs?

Can my shoe wardrobe go even lower than 12 pairs?

Do I own too many shoes?  An interesting question.  My current shoe wardrobe, discussed in this post, includes 20 shoes.  But one day, I would like to have a shoe wardrobe closer in size to the one Vivienne discusses here.  I have a long way to go to reduce my shoe wardrobe down to 6 shoes.  With a current shoe wardrobe of 20 shoes, I am over Vivienne’s goal of 6 shoes, by 14 shoes!  This would require me to donate 70% of my shoe wardrobe.  Yikes!
