Memorial Day Sales—The Perfect Time

May 29, 2017

Memorial Day Sale Signs

Memorial Day Sales At JCrew, Target, and Macy’s.

Memorial Day Sales come at the perfect time of year—the beginning of the summer season.  If you’ve been following me on Instagram then you already know that I really enjoy shopping the Memorial Day Sales.  I sport my summer capsule wardrobe for 3 months, starting June 1, which makes the timing for Memorial Day sales perfect for me.  If I wait until Fourth of July, when seasonal merchandise gets the clearance sale treatment, I’ll already be halfway through the summer season.  And besides, by mid-summer, I’m already starting to think about upcoming back-to-school sales and my fall capsule wardrobe.

While I enjoy shopping during this holiday weekend, I don’t want to spend the entire weekend visiting the stores.  To ensure that my shopping sessions are short and fast I follow these 3 steps:

Different Day, Same Sale, Or Almost

November 17, 2016

How long has this dress really been on sale?

It’s the middle of November and the holiday shopping season is approaching fast.  This is the time of year when retailers step up their promotion game and I won’t be able to go anywhere or watch anything without seeing an ad for a sale.

But are these sales really as “new” as they sound?

Not always.  This pink A-line dress is listed on the retailer’s website as a “new markdown” item.  But when you shop as much as me, you learn all of the strategies that retailers use to get customers to buy.

It’s (Sort Of) On Sale

September 5, 2016

9.5.2016

It’s on sale….maybe…

I noticed this sign at a retailer over the weekend and shook my head.  At first glance, it sounded like everything was on sale for 40% off.  When you re-read the sign, you realize that it stated “almost everything”, which means that most items, but not all, will be on sale.  Ok no biggie right?  I’ll just look for the sale items, which should be the majority of those pieces in the store.

But…

My Favorite Sale Is Back

July 23, 2016

7.24.2016.01

One event I look forward to every year occurs in the middle of July.  It is my favorite sale of the entire year—the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.  And I am not alone, many bloggers are posting their advice on the best items to purchase, as well as how to shop the sale.  Here are some of my favorites:

Don’t Ask, Just Give

February 7, 2016

I was out in the stores shopping recently.  At the check-out counter the cashier points to the credit card pad and said, “Just hit OK so that I can complete your transaction.”  Luckily I glanced at the screen and noticed that the “OK” option was for me to give out my personal email address to sign up for coupons and special discount offers.  I looked at the worker and said, “No, I don’t want to do that.”  She looked surprised, then fumbled around and hit a few keys to complete the transaction.

Black Friday Alternatives

November 26, 2015

Tomorrow is Black Friday.  As Black Friday has grown in popularity, the hours to shop have expanded, while the savings to your wallet have decreased in size.  Some people would even argue that Black Friday itself is no longer the day to shop.  One should wait for Saturday or even Cyber Monday instead.

While retailers have been working hard trying to entice people to shop til they drop over the next 4 days, I’ve been working hard on a different objective—what I’m going to do instead of shopping.

Here’s my list: Keep on reading

Black Friday Creep

November 22, 2015

“Creep” is when something slowly and carefully moves.  You’ll hear me mention the term “wardrobe creep” for those times when my wardrobe total has increased slowly over time without my conscious knowledge.  I’ve noticed the same trend for Black Friday sales, thus the term “Black Friday Creep.”  The start of the holiday shopping season has slowly crept up in date over the years.

My Favorite Socks

November 15, 2015

Smartwool socks

Smartwool socks are my favorite socks.

I have sweaty feet and when I wear cotton socks my feet always end up soaking wet by the end of the day.  The cotton just can’t absorb all of the moisture.

Most wool socks I find too scratchy against my skin, but the Smartwool brand works really well for me.  I’ve picked these up in sporting good stores, The Walking Company, and ordered them directly from Amazon.  They come in many options and I prefer the “casual” style as it has the same thickness throughout the sock (photo above) which works well for me as a daily sock.  In fact these work so well, I sport them year round as my daily socks.

If your feet are like mine and sweat easily, you may want to give the Smartwool brand a try!

What’s your favorite brand of socks?

Don’t Forget To Shop

July 30, 2015

Walking around the brick and mortar store while shopping my favorite sale, I noticed a variety of subtle (or not so subtle) reminders to shop, shop, shop.  The store was decked out in signs, both big and small, every where I turned.  But it wasn’t just the sheer number of reminders that caught my eye, but the wording themselves.

A reminder to start shopping.

A reminder to start shopping.

The more I find, the better I feel

Well, isn’t that a nice way to justify to shop for more, and that it’s ok.  Here are a few more.
