Trending Now: Velvet

velvet blazer

My new velvet blazer from White House Black Market.

One fabric that I see year after year in both fall and winter collections is velvet. This timeless fabric consists of densely woven, raised fibers that are soft to the touch.  Velvet garments are costly to produce. Two fabrics of same thickness are woven together, then cut apart and rolled onto separate rolls before using. The laborious manufacturing process and high price tag is why velvet was often associated with nobility.  Another form of velvet that typically pops up in fall and winter collections is corduroy, which is a raised form of velvet.

What To Consider When Buying Jewelry

November 6, 2017

Jewelry is an easy way to pull a look together.  Bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings, you have a wide variety of options that can elevate any outfit.  In addition to what piece of jewelry you want to own, there’s another, even more important consideration to keep in mind—are you going to buy costume jewelry or fine jewelry?

In order to decide which option you want, you have to consider what quality of metal and stones you want your jewelry to have.

Favorite outfits for October.

Welcome to my monthly recap of what happened on Shopping Brake, as well as my favorite outfits from Instagram over the past month.

Crafting a personal style that is uniquely yours is achieved through a lot of work including: trial and error, an intimate knowledge of how to dress for your body type, and having an understanding of which colors are most flattering on you.  It must also provide you with the clothes that fit into your daily lifestyle, because that’s how you showcase your personal style.  And on top of all of that, is one more aspect you have to consider, The Number One Rule To Having Personal StyleConsistency will carry your personal style through the changes in your life over time.

Fall season is boot season and my favorite way to sport boots with pairing them with jeans.  Here are a few Handy Tips For Wearing Boots And Jeans that you can begin now and use throughout the fall and winter seasons.

In the United States, as well as a few other countries, the last day of October is celebrated as Halloween.  With costumes ideas on my mind and western style having a moment in fashion, I discussed The Secret To Dressing Western, Without Looking Like You’re Wearing A Costume, then flipped those rules to provide a few ideas for Easy Halloween Costumes For The Lazy Gal.  How many statement pieces you wear will affect if your outfit looks like a Halloween costume, or not.

Spend or Save — Taupe Booties and Quilted Vests

October 19, 2017

Would you spend or save on this fall look?

One of the things that excites me the most about dressing for fall is that I get to wear all of my boots again.  Since it takes my area time to cool down enough to sport knee high and over the knee boots without overheating, I satisfy my craving for boots with booties first. As a blonde haired gal, I’m especially fond of taupe because it’s a lighter neutral than black, yet just as versatile. And a vest is the ideal topper for layering during transitional weather too. The torso keeps you warm, yet your arms are still uncovered so you don’t overheat.

If you’re thinking about adding a pair of booties or quilted vests to your fall wardrobe the first thing you have to decide is if you want to Spend or Save.

Here are the two options:

3 Tricks For Busy Women To Get Dressed Fast

October 16, 2017

Sometimes you just don’t know what to wear.

Some days you have to get out the door in a hurry. Those are the mornings when I reach for one of my grab and go outfits. Grab and go (also called fast fall back) outfits are those outfits that I’ve put together in advance. I typically plan at least a few outfits when I set up my capsule wardrobe at the start of each season. But what if I don’t want to wear any of my re-planned outfits and I’m getting dressed in a hurry?

Here are 3 ways I get ready fast, without reaching for one of my grab and go looks.

Favorite outfits for September

Welcome to my monthly recap of what happened on Shopping Brake, as well as my favorite outfits from Instagram this past month.

I adore wardrobe challenges and I have not done one in a while, which made the start of the fall season the perfect time for the Wardrobe Basics Challenge — The White T-Shirt. This challenge puts the theory that a basic white t-shirt is a versatile wardrobe item to the test. From this challenge I demonstrated 7 Stylish Ways To Wear A Plain White T-Shirt. For my personal wardrobe, a white t-shirt is a wise choice.

Remixing wardrobe basics, such as a white t-shirt, is one of 5 Budget Friendly Style Tips For Women to make sure that you’re getting the most out of the money you spend on your clothes. When to spend or save, learning how to sport quality, shopping everywhere, and taking care of your clothes with a steamer are 4 more suggestions. You can also take the 5 Budget Friendly Style Tips For Men, a guest post from Peter Minkoff, a men’s fashion writer at Gentleman Zone magazine from UK and Australia and apply it to your own wardrobe.

With the fall season in full swing, it was time for me to do a Fall Capsule Wardrobe Check-In. My fall wardrobe started out a little too large, with a whopping 58 pieces! I culled it down to a more manageable 42 items to use for my 2017 Fall Capsule Wardrobe.

Finally, falls cooler days had me wanting to update my fall jacket. When shopping for a new jacket, I had to make an important decision, whether to Spend Or Save — Fall Jacket. The fit of the jacket lead me to pick the save option.

Now on to the outfits from my fall capsule wardrobe!

In my last post I began my Fall Capsule Wardrobe Check-In and discussed what was and wasn’t working over the past month. My fall wardrobe was all ready to go after I culled it down to a manageable 42 items. Until I walked into Target to buy stuff for my home, and walked out with stuff for my closet.

Does this ever happen to anyone else?
