Christmas Decorating: Real Or Fake?

As I mentioned in this post I only decorate 3 times a year.  And the only holiday I decorate for is Christmas because we are the hosts.  One piece of advice I often read about for someone who wants to live a minimalist lifestyle and decorate for Christmas is to use live pieces that can be tossed instead of stored after the season (pine, mistletoe, poinsettia’s, evergreen etc).  And while I can appreciate the logic of doing so, I have discovered another option I like better.

Bath & Body Works Foam Soaps

Bath & Body Works foam soaps are my favorite.

I’m a big fan of the foam soaps produced by Bath & Body Works.  Especially the seasonal scents.  They always brighten my day and are a nice nod to the current season.  However, it is very, very easy to stock up on these soaps.  Then I end up with too many soaps, and not enough time in the season to use them all up.  Now, when I purchase these soaps, I do two things:

Decorate For Fall or Halloween?

To keep the storage of home decorations low, I decorate only 3 times a year:

  1. Fall
  2. Christmas
  3. Rest of Year

After many months of spring and summer with the same items used for both seasons, decorating for fall is always welcomed.  I select ‘harvest themed items’ so that I can display items from September throughout November, almost 3 full months, before needing to change for the holiday/Christmas season.  I have two Halloween themed items that blend in with the harvest themed pieces.

Clutter Creeps In Everywhere

A primary focus on Shopping Brake has been wardrobes, however, clutter can creep into a home anywhere!  One way I avoid excessive accumulation of clutter is to reevaluate everything in my home at least twice a year.  It may sound like an arduous task, however, the less I own, the easier it is to evaluate each piece.  Every time I do a clean out, I find yet more items that have managed to sneak into the home at some point after the last cull.

Inspired by How to Be Chic blog, I decided to focus on my kitchen today because I have found that it is a great place for clutter to accumulate.
