80/20 Wardrobe Challenge

Add In, Then Taketh Away

Five Items to purge.

Five Items to donate.

The problem with focusing on one’s wardrobe is that sometimes, it becomes difficult to stop adjusting.  I know for myself, once I get started with adjusting my wardrobe, it’s like pushing a rock from the top of a cliff, it starts rolling and then picks up speed.

Lately I’ve been adjusting some of the capsules in my wardrobe.  I recently overhauled my Business/Special Occasion Capsule to make it more cohesive for colors and remixing abilities.  I also merged five of these items into my Spring/Summer capsule wardrobe to increase the use of the new additions.  However, I’m trying to decrease the size of my total wardrobe.  Adding these five new items was pestering me.  I added items in, but what did I remove?  Nothing!  Until now.

Current Spring/Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Current Spring/Summer capsule wardrobe with the new additions.

In my last post I merged a few of my new Business/Special Occasion Capsule items into my Spring/Summer capsule wardrobe.  I added give items into the capsule I use more often, to increase their frequency of use.

This shuffle reduced the number of items that sit in my Business/Special Occasion Capsule, but increased the size of my Spring/Summer capsule wardrobe.

Double Duty Capsule Items (Month 5)

April 2, 2015

Recently I updated my business capsule wardrobe in three parts:

  1. Part One: Purging.  In part one, I reviewed my wardrobe and purged items as necessary.
  2. Part Two: Shopping.  In part two, I purchased new pieces.
  3. Part Three: Remixing. In part three, I double-checked that my new additions remixed well with my capsule items.

Any time something is added to my wardrobe, it’s going to have a ripple effect.  Not only will the capsule it’s added to change, but my overall wardrobe will change as well.  Let’s take a look at the impact of the new business capsule additions on my entire wardrobe.

Repair Don’t Replace

February 1, 2015

New laces instead of new boots.

New laces instead of new boots.

As I shop less often, and keep items longer, I’m starting to run into a new issue with my wardrobe—repairs!  These lace up booties have been worn 92 times for a current cost per wear of $1.96.  The laces ripped for the boot on the right.  In the past, any slight problem with an item in my wardrobe and I was off to the malls to shop for something to replace it.  These booties have two factors that would have previously caused me to shop for a replacement:

  1. Low cost per wear
  2. In need of repair

Except this time, I purchased new laces instead.

Do you prefer to repair or replace items?

Squeeze The Capsule Wardrobe

January 1, 2015

Tops from the Business Capsule, added to the Fall/Winter Wardrobe.

Tops from the Business/Special Occasion capsule, added to the Fall/Winter capsule wardrobe

Happy New Year!  One of my goals in 2015 is to continue to reduce the size of my wardrobe.  At the beginning of month 1, I realized that I have many capsules in my wardrobe.  And if I want to succeed with The 80/20 Challenge, then I’m going to need to do more than simply purge clothing that I’m not using.  I also have to stretch the use of my capsules.  By using items in more than one capsule, I can maximize the use of my wardrobe.  The less divided into capsules my wardrobe is, the less chance there is for pieces to sit unworn for long periods of time.  This reasoning means my least used wardrobe capsules are my latest target for a little closet editing.
