January No Spend Challenge — Two Week Check-In

I’m on week 2 of the January No Spend Challenge, where for the month of January I’m trying to only shop for the essentials and nothing else. For the rules of the challenge, check out this post.

I’m happy to report that for week 2, I did not shop for anything that was non-essential. However, I have noticed that my desire to shop, has increased quite a bit. It’s the middle of January, and my area is in the heart of the winter season, which means it is also the middle of sweater weather, my favorite time of year. With the stores clearing out their winter collections, sweaters are on sale, sometimes at deep, deep discounts, which makes resisting the urge to shop, that much harder to do.

Thankfully, I have a quick and easy way to stop this urge before it can manifest and wreck my participation in the no spend challenge.

What did I do?

 

I analyzed my current sweater collection instead.

First, I counted how many sweaters I already own.

Yep, that’s right, I own a whopping 13 sweaters, that’s almost two weeks worth of sweaters before I would have to repeat wearing a single 1 of them.

Second, how many sweaters have I worn regularly thus far this season?

You read that right. I’ve only worn about half of my sweaters on a regular basis thus far this season.

Once I realized these two things, the solution was simple, rotate the sweaters and start wearing the stragglers. Sporting my “in the back of the closet” sweaters for the first time, mid-season, will make my wardrobe feel like brand new. And if I don’t want to wear the sweater, then I’ve just figured out which one’s that I need to purge from my wardrobe at the end of the season.

Sometimes, wardrobe boredom sets in and it spurs a person to shop to fix it. Next time this happens to you, take a step back and really analyze what is inside your closet. The solution may already be sitting there right in front of you.
