A capsule wardrobe is when you take a select portion of your wardrobe and wear only those pieces for a specific length of time. For myself, my daily outfits are picked out from a seasonal capsule wardrobe and, since I live in a four season state, I sport my capsule wardrobe for 3 months before switching to a new capsule wardrobe.

Our fall season this year has included a wide range of temperatures, daytime highs have been has warm as ~70F and as cool as 32F. With such dramatic swings in temperatures, I’ve had to be careful to ensure that my fall capsule wardrobe included pieces that would work well for both cool and warm days.

Here’s everything included in my fall capsule wardrobe for 2018:

I began my capsule wardrobe from the bottom, and focused on footwear and bottoms. For my casual work environment, jeans are ok for daily wear. Two skinny jeans and 1 bootcut provide enough variety for me. I stuck with the number 3 for my boots, picking 1 boot for 3 different styles, a black short boot, a cowgirl boot, and a knee high boot.

With the bottom half of my outfits sorted out, I went to the top, and focused on toppers for layering on days where the temperatures swing big throughout the day. The two blazers work well with the short black boots and skinny jeans. The tan jacket is a perfect pairing with my cowgirl boots and bootcut jeans.

Continuing with my theme of the number 3, I selected 3 cardigans. Both black cardigans pair well with my short black boots, however, one cardigan is long (perfect for the skinny jeans) and one is short (perfect for the bootcut jeans) to give a little variety. Since my black boots are short, they work with either skinny jeans or bootcut jeans. The brown cardigan pairs well with both my cowgirl boots and knee high brown boots.

All of the blazers, jackets, and cardigans needs something to layer with. That’s where the 4 tops come into play.

I also added in 4 turtlenecks and 4 long sleeve t-shirts, for layering options on those days when it is warmer or cooler.

Finally, I added 4 lightweight sweaters for those days when I’m not in a layering mood.

To summarize, my 2018 fall capsule wardrobe includes 28 items:

  • 3 jeans
  • 3 boots
  • 3 blazers/jackets
  • 3 cardigans
  • 4 tops
  • 4 turtlenecks
  • 4 long sleeve t-shirts
  • 4 lightweight sweaters

The total cost of this wardrobe is: $1,769.01. The most expensive categories are my boots ($468.33) and cardigans ($474.63). These higher price points is from my cowgirl boots (this pair is the most expensive pair I own), and my cardigans, because two of them are by Theory. None of the pieces in either of these categories is new. In contrast, the lowest priced category is my turtlenecks, which were purchased at Walmart and I anticipate will only last 1 season.
