Prepping A Summer Capsule Wardrobe (Part 3)

June 8, 2017

This is part 3 of a 3-part series where I am preparing my summer capsule wardrobe.  Here’s an overview of how I’ll work through this process:

  1. Part One I’ll review, edit, and shop my closet for my summer capsule wardrobe
  2. Part Two I’ll write my shopping list and go shopping for my summer capsule wardrobe
  3. Part Three I’ll review what’s in this capsule wardrobe and pre-plan how to wear some of the new things I’ve added to my summer capsule wardrobe

Now onto the fun!

Part Three-Review Your Capsule & Plan Your Outfits

First up in my review is a little number crunching:

I have 41 clothing items in my 2017 summer capsule wardrobe including:

  • 1 hoodie
  • 1 blazer
  • 2 jackets
  • 5 cardigans
  • 1 pullover knit
  • 7 short sleeve tops (5 t-shirts and 2 modal)
  • 7 tank tops
  • 7 tops (1 long sleeve blouse, 2 three-quarter sleeve, 1 off the shoulder, 1 cold shoulder, 2 tunics)
  • 1 leggings
  • 1 cargo capris
  • 6 jeans (2 boyfriend, 3 skinny, 1 bootcut)
  • 1 chino trouser
  • 1 shorts

I also have 12 pairs of shoes:

  • 2 cowgirl boots
  • 1 block heel bootie
  • 1 pair flip flops
  • 1 flat sandal
  • 3 ballet flats
  • 1 Adidas Superstar sneakers
  • 1 espadrille
  • 1 boat shoe
  • 1 slip on sneakers

That brings the total for this wardrobe to 53 items.

I find it’s always helpful to review what I bought, with what’s already in my capsule wardrobe.  I do this for 2 reasons: 1) this review allows me to ensure that what I purchased will work well with the pieces in my wardrobe, and, 2) I have a collection of pre-planned outfits to grab and go on rush days when I don’t have time to fiddle with assembling an outfit in the morning.

Here’s how I’m planning wear a couple of the pieces from my summer capsule wardrobe:

Adidas superstar outfit

Outfit #1 – Adidas Superstar sneakers outfit

For outfit #1, I’m sporting my new Adidas Superstar sneakers with a denim jacket by Kut From the Kloth, black jeans from Lucky Brand, and a white t-shirt by Caslon.  I’ve been sporting the combination of a blue denim jacket and black jeans for years and remixing this outfit with my new sneakers really freshens up the look for me.

cowgirl boots outfit

Outfit #2 – Striped cardigan and cowboy boots

Outfit #2 uses my new striped cardigan and rust tank top from Walmart paired with my Lucky Brand Lolita bootcut jeans and Boulet cowboy boots.  If you follow me on instagram then you already know that I wear Lucky Brand denim—a lot.  As a gal with a curvy bottom, and also short in height I have found that the Sweet n Low, Sweet n Straight, and Lolita cuts work really well for me.

olive jacket outfit

Outfit # 3 – Olive jacket and espadrilles

For outfit #3, I’ve freshened up the look of another classic outfit combination for me, my olive jacket from Gap, a white t-shirt from Bass, and Joe’s jeans boyfriend style jeans by adding my new Franco Sarto espadrilles.  A belt by Lucky Brand finishes this look.

In a few weeks I’ll check-in on how this capsule wardrobe is doing, provide an item by item recap of exactly what’s inside this capsule wardrobe, and tally up the total cost.  Waiting a few weeks will give me the opportunity to make any necessary adjustments near the start of the summer season.

Don’t want to wait for my capsule wardrobe check-in?  Check-out this previous post where I reviewed exactly what was inside my spring capsule wardrobe, including the total cost:
