A Mini Purge (Month 2)

December 21, 2014

Current Fall/Winter Wardrobe, a few items are in the wash bin.

Current Fall/Winter capsule wardrobe after the mini edit; a few items are in the wash bin.

Today I begin the second month of The 80/20 Challenge.  And that means it’s time to check in on the status of my current wardrobe.  The one month check in was here.

My fall/wardrobe had 61 items during the last check-in.

I’ve had a lot of shuffling of wardrobe items in the past month:

To keep things from getting too hairy, I’m going to focus on the fall/winter wardrobe numbers for today’s check-in.

My current fall/winter capsule wardrobe has 63 items:

  • 7 bottoms (jeans and trousers; no change)
  • 17 toppers (this includes: pullover sweaters, blazers and cardigans; 2 added from Black Friday shopping and 1 was purged)
  • 9 knits (used for layering; purged 1 knit)
  • 8 gear items (5 toppers [fleece, fleece, fleece, vest, vest], 2 layering knits [turtlenecks] and 1 bottom [jean]; 2 vests and 2 turtlenecks added and 1 turtleneck was purged)
  • 1 shirt (for layering; purged 1 shirt)
  • 4 LS T’s (for layering; no change)
  • 4 tanks (for layering; no change)
  • 6 thermal layers (no change)
  • 5 scarves (no change)
  • 4 workout items (2 tops and 2 bottoms; not shown in closet photo; no change)
  • 2 Short Sleeve Tops/Knits (no change)

And I realize that I’m not wearing a few items right now.  Keeping in mind my last post on the power of three, I’m going to purge the items I’m not using.

In my last post I noticed that I’m not using all four pairs of my skinny jeans, I keep reaching for the same three instead.  The same holds true for my long sleeve t’s, again I keep using the same three and leaving the fourth one to sit week after week.

Two items purged.

Two items donated.

Now I’m down to three skinny jeans and three bootcut jeans, a nice variety for the week.  I also have three long sleeve t’s and I still have thermals and a shirt to use as a layer on other days.  Over the next month, I’m going to keep an eye on the other categories where I have more than 3 items, to see if I am also reaching for the same 3 pieces again.

After today’s mini edit, I’m down to 61 items in my fall/winter capsule wardrobe:

  • 6 bottoms (jeans and trousers; 1 purged)
  • 17 toppers (this includes: pullover sweaters, blazers and cardigans; no change)
  • 9 knits (used for layering; no change)
  • 8 gear items (5 toppers [fleece, fleece, fleece, vest, vest], 2 layering knits [turtlenecks] and 1 bottom [jean]; no change)
  • 1 shirt (for layering; no change)
  • 3 LS T’s (for layering; 1 purged)
  • 4 tanks (for layering; no change)
  • 6 thermal layers (no change)
  • 5 scarves (no change)
  • 4 workout items (2 tops and 2 bottoms; not shown in closet photo; no change)
  • 2 Short Sleeve Tops/Knits (no change)

Do you plan ahead before you edit your wardrobe?

  1. I just did a mini-purge of my own. Two tops from Spring that I finally was able to get over the regret and let them go, and two sweaters that kicked the bucket in the last few weeks (my purple cowl sweater developed a hole, and my white sweater is stretched out and stained). I replaced the sweaters but not the tops.

    1. Congrats on your mini purge! It always feels good to let go of items, no matter how big or small the purge is. And extra kudos to not replacing things right away. This is something I’ve only recently started doing and it is helping me to further shrink the size of my wardrobe.
