Fall French Capsule Challenge Update

September 18, 2014

Right now I'm craving more of the bootcut style jean on the right, than the skinny jeans on the left.

Right now I’m craving more of the bootcut style jean on the right, than the skinny jeans on the left.

I’ve just completed my second week of the Fall French Capsule Challenge.  And as usual, I have a few observations.

  1. Preferences change with the seasons
  2. A small wardrobe requires discipline

Here’s a closer look at each observation.

1. Preferences change with the seasons

I spent most of the spring/summer season sporting skinny and straight leg jeans and ballet flats.  When I assembled my Fall French Capsule Challenge wardrobe I made sure that 4 of the 5 bottoms I selected, were skinny and straight leg jeans.  Unfortunately, I don’t want to wear them right now.  There’s nothing wrong with them, and I still like the look, but I keep reaching for my bootcut jeans first and wishing that I had added another one or two bootcut jean styles to the challenge wardrobe instead of so many pairs of skinny and straight leg jeans.  Apparently once the calendar turned to fall, so did my preference for bootcut jeans and boots instead of for the skinny and straight leg jeans and ballet flats that I sported so often during spring and summer.

In the back of  my mind, I know that once our weather turns snowy and slushy, I’m going to be reaching for my tall boots and skinny jeans everyday.  So right now, while the weather is cooler but still dry, I want to sport my bootcut jeans the most.

2.  A small wardrobe requires discipline

This observations stems from the one above.  My fall/winter wardrobe has more than one pair of bootcut jeans, I just didn’t include them in my current Fall French Capsule Challenge Wardrobe.  It would be very easy for me to reach into the rest of my fall/winter wardrobe and start sporting the bootcut jeans NOW.  But I’m going to wait it out for the final week of the challenge before I do so.

Why?

What if I didn’t own more bootcut jeans?  And right now I really WANT to start sporting them?  I’d be off to the stores searching for a new pair (or two or three, after all the shopping beast still exists, it’s just sleeping for the moment) and before I knew it, I’d have yet another shopping binge AND I would have broken the rules of the French Capsule Challenge, which was to use the same 21 items for 3 weeks.  If I want to maintain participating in the challenge, then I need to have a little discipline and stick with my selected items.  After all, I only have one week left.

Do your fashion preferences change with the seasons?
